The events of this morning have us all in a state of disbelief and disappointment. As a psychology student organization, we feel that what happened is a regression from the already poor mental health awareness here in Malta.

Not only did this incident set us back in our attempt to improve the current situation, but it is also a reflection of the crass insensitivity and cruelty some people are capable of.

Should anyone come across a sensitive situation such as this, the first thing to do is to report it to the police and call an ambulance. When talking to a person, it is important to keep calm and to encourage them to come back to safety.

We thank the law enforcement officials who stepped in and resolved the situation before it escalated further and we hope the individuals responsible acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. For any bystanders, what happened today is definitely not the way to help someone going through difficulty.

If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty with their mental health, please make use of the FSWS support line 1772 or helpline 179, 1770 Richmond foundation, kellimni.com, and/or Olli Chat.
