Social network has become an efficient platform whereby individuals have the possibility of sharing their views and perspectives on matters. Naturally, conflict of opinion is inevitable, especially when discussing controversial issues. Betapsi would like to address the problematic expression of such differences in opinion, as most recently seen in the issues pertaining to migration and transgenderism.
Betapsi condemns the use of hate speech in expressing disagreement with another’s stance. It is impossible to ignore the tendency embedded within our society to resort to personal attack, rather than the argument put forward. It is too often that individuals impulsively insult and demean one another instead of engaging in healthy discussion on said topic.
It is also important to note that this is not a recent phenomenon but has been recurring over a long period of time, surfacing when controversial issues arise.
As a psychology student association, we would like to encourage the public to abandon such inhumane practices and opt for more civil and considerate alternatives to expressing differences of opinion. Engaging in such discussions allows individuals to broaden their perspectives as they are introduced to new ways of thinking, and factors they had not previously considered. Keeping an open mind is essential in such circumstances.
Public discussion on current affairs is necessary in upholding any democratic society, given it is executed properly. As Betapsi, we urge the public to do so, while respecting others and maintaining boundaries.
Betapsi would also like to emphasise the importance of respecting people’s autonomy and treating them as equals. We call for the eradication of the general use of hate speech, both online and offline, to collectively work towards a more open society, which accepts and embraces diversity, while safeguarding each other’s general well-being.
We are satisfied that such incidents are being acknowledged and addressed by the appropriate authorities, and that investigations by the appropriate authorities are underway.
